I come from a family of artists and can remember ‘sitting’ for my Gran’s life drawing classes in the local community centre. I always loved to draw as a child and would create books full of funny pictures to make my sister laugh. As art was my form of expression it became central to my identity throughout my teenage years, but some experiences in my late teens, not least my father’s illness and subsequent death made the process of painting too painful and regrettably after my A Levels I stopped.
Following my Media Arts degree I enjoyed a successful 10 year career in public relations and marketing for lifestyle brands, working with some of the best people in the industry. Despite that time being rich in experience and development there was something missing. I realised later that it was the need to create and get back to painting and drawing. Moving from London to Brighton and starting a family was the catalyst to finding my way back. While my children were young I took any opportunity I could to attend a course and make time for creativity. Once the youngest of my three children started school I knew that carving out a creative career was absolutely the right path, and so here I am!
Growing up in the countryside, and now living on the edge of the South Downs and minutes from the sea, there’s endless inspiration to be found in nature’s colours and organic forms.
In my work, I combine watercolours, inks and coloured pencils in order to create clarity of colour, textured layers and fine details that reflect nature’s vitality and intricacies.
Working with watercolours enables my process to begin free and loose and the colour merges are pleasingly unpredictable. Overlaying with ink means I can add small scale detail whilst pastels and pencils clarify the colours and bring in textures. Every piece begins with these traditional materials which I then combine with digital techniques to create patterns and compositions.
Striking the balance between visual impact and the invitation to investigate the detail is really satisfying.
My art looks striking but has space within it. They’re pictures to appreciate from afar, yet intriguing enough to invite you to explore the detail.
